1) • Recent increases in the price of oil are pushing energy to the top of the political agenda.
And as concerned global citizens, we want to see fossil fuels banned and gone by the year 2012.
2) • Today, fossil fuels (oil, coal and natural gas) are responsible for 80% of the World’s Energy – these fuels power our homes, industry, ships, planes, trains and automobiles
3) • The potential for environmental damage in the fossil fuel industry exists at every stage. Harvesting oil and gas results in the destruction of surface land. The transportation of raw and refined material has many dangers. And burning fossil fuels creates complex environmental problems.
4) • Burning Fossil Fuels releases Carbon Dioxide (CO2) into the earth’s atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide also is a natural component of the atmosphere – but its present-day excess from industry and the like threatens the wellbeing of our ecosystem. Though we and other living things may need it in small quantities, it also has become a pollutant.
5) • In 1900 oil production reached 1 million barrels a day – a staggering figure for the times.
6) • Today production rates have risen to 85 million barrels a day – an even more staggering figure for these times.
7) • An over-reliance on energy imports from politically unstable countries can have disastrous effects, and add to human misery with war.
8) • The Fossil Fuel market is volatile and causing a massive drain on the global economy
9) • Fossil Fuels are a non- renewable source of energy -- which means they exist in limited amounts
10) • CO2, from fossil fuels and other pollutants, is accumulating in the earth’s atmosphere at an unprecedented rate
11) * High concentrations of CO2 are Responsible for Climate Change
12) • If we continue to consume and pollute at our current rate CO2 emissions will double by 2050 and global temperatures will rise 2 Degrees
13) • A global increase of 2 Degrees will have catastrophic consequences for human populations
14) • The only way to Combat Climate Change is to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions – especially CO2. And one vital way we can do that is to create and put into place forms of alternative energy – for our cars and so much else!
• Oil, Coal & Natural Gas are Fossil Fuels
• Coal fueled the industrial development of the Western World
• Many Developing Nations still rely on coal to generate heat and power
• The petrochemical industry takes the hydrocarbon molecules contained in crude oil and natural gas to produce a range of household products including rubber, fertilizers, shampoo, detergents, solvents, synthetic fibers, dyes, paints and insecticides and many more products
• Projections indicate that global demand for oil will exceed supply by 2020
• Fluctuating prices at the pumps will not only become commonplace, but continue to soar as fossil fuels become more scarce and more expensive to refine
• CO2 is a heat-trapping molecule commonly referred to as a greenhouse gas
• The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts a rise in temperature between 1.4 and 5.8 Degrees Celsius from 1990 to 2100
